World Oceans Day is a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future held every year on 8th June, since 1992.
It is a global initiative bringing communities together from across the world to fight for a healthier marine environment and to raise awareness of the crucial role the oceans play in our lives.
This year’s theme is The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods; reminding everyone how important our oceans are to the planet and why it is imperative that we all take action to ensure the sustainable future of them all.
World Oceans Day reminds everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our Planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere.
The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.
The importance of our Oceans
“The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.”
The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.
Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support.
With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. To protect and preserve the ocean and all it sustains, we must create a new balance, rooted in true understanding of the ocean and how humanity relates to it. We must build a connection to the ocean that is inclusive, innovative, and informed by lessons from the past. “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” is the theme for World Oceans Day 2021, as well as a declaration of intentions that launches a decade of challenges to get the Sustainable Development Goal 14, “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources”, by 2030.
Protect the Oceans with Water-to-Go
By using a Water-to-Go bottle, you can do your part to protect the World’s Oceans by using an environmentally friendly alternative to single-use plastic water bottles that contaminate our oceans. You can save money as well as saving the planet by not needing to purchase overpriced bottled water.
Water-to-Go seeks to protect our customers’ health and well-being by offering safe, healthy water anywhere in the world but to also protect our planet by offering an environmentally friendly reusable alternative to single-use plastic water bottles.
We also work with businesses, organisations and travel companies across the world; to help fulfil their role as responsible operators, reduce their impact on the planet and do their bit to help protect our oceans.
A more recent threat to our oceans that has come to light is microplastics. Microplastics can be harmful to our oceans, aquatic life, and the environment. However, the perfect way to filter out microplastics wherever you are is by using a Water-to-Go bottle. Our filters reduce the pore size to under 2 microns meaning they will trap and remove microplastics, as well as microbiological contaminants from any tap or non-saltwater source.
